What is a remediation plan for students?

There are different types of students. Some students grasp every knowledge given to them easily, while some students fall under the category that requires some extra explanation before they can understand what is taught in the class. The last group is those students that never understand anything taught to them in the class, no matter the method or the step you took to teach them, it all becomes futile. It got to a point of you doubting if your teaching skills are the problem or the explanation is not in the simplest form for them to understand, don’t panic, those students are special children, and that is why a remediation plan is formulated. Lets find out what is a remediation plan for students?

What is a remediation plan for students?

Before we delve right into what a remediation plan is, let us first define what remedial is or what remediation means in the real world. Remedial means to correct something. Girls use the word remedial the most because, during puberty, they suffer from acne or pimples so they tend to look for ways to correct it. For example, I am looking for a remedy for my acne(remedial in the sentence means that she’s looking for ways to amend her acne). Remediation is the act or process of amending something. In other words, it is the act or process of looking for a cure or solution to a problem.

Remedial education is a type of education that is objective is to attend to the learning needs of a specific group of students who are lagging in their studies or are not mastering specific competencies during their early grades. In simpler terms, remedial education is the learning given to a targeted student who doesn’t understand the fundamental topic taught during their early level.

A remediation plan for students or a remediation program is a plan used to re-teach students the basic skills taught in lower grades that are yet to be comprehended. They address the learning gaps by re-teaching students’ fundamental subjects or topics. The remediation program is not limited to those with disabilities alone, it is for everyone.

Benefits of a remediation program

  • It gives insight into students’ learning activities and also practical experiences to pupils depending on their skills and requirements, using the school curriculum and teaching methods.
  • It also helps the teacher develop individualized instructional plans with activities that are relevant to help students consolidate their basic knowledge in a variety of courses, manage learning processes, build confidence, and improve their learning capacity.
  • It helps students enhance their generic abilities such as interpersonal interactions, communication, problem-solving, self-management, self-learning, critical thinking, imagination, and also the use of information systems.
  • Remedial education program builds the basis for students’ lifelong learning by supporting them in the formation of healthy attitudes and values, as well as preparing them for postsecondary education.

Remediation strategies for students.

A remediation strategy is a procedure or plan set aside to achieve the purpose or objective of a remediation program for students. It is the strategy that helps to understand how a student is copying in a particular course and what method or techniques will help that kind of student to comprehend that course fully. There is no single remedial teaching strategy and thus,  methods of remedial education were created, which are both used in regular and remedial settings.

  • Analyzing the problem and providing a solution to the problem.

This strategy is used to identify the problem a particular student is passing through in their course of study. This strategy is most common in higher institutions, whereby a student won’t be grace to take a particular course if he/she didn’t pass a remedial course. Remedial courses are those where the material taught is below college level. That means the material is from K-12 and typically students taking those courses need them to help prepare for college-level work. When a student fails a remedial course, he/she will be advised to attend a remedial class. A remedial class is a class required for some particular set of people to build up their math or English skills before they can be privileged to take a higher course. Taking this class shows that the student isn’t left on his own but has the help of a teacher to help him/her in the particular subject he is lagging.

  • Constant review and encouragement for students

This is the aspect where you asked for what the student understood during the period of teaching. You shouldn’t assume all students learn at the same pace instead, ask for what they have learned individually. This is done by asking them to re-explain the knowledge they gain during the class and where you need to re-teach them. After the review, teach them lightly and encourage them that the subject isn’t that hard and they can do it. Encouragement brings bravery and thus they will begin to see that hard subject in another way before you know it, they will understand the course and ace the class as you expected.

  • Task them by setting a high standard for them

This is also similar to constant review. After the review, task them by giving them a question or passage to work on. Do not lower your standard because they are struggling in class or they are not capable to discern quickly like those that are not taking the remedial lesson, by doing this, you are not encouraging them to do better in that particular course. Sometimes students need a challenging course or subject for them to do excellently with their peers.

  • Differentiating the class and placing them with their study habits

Differentiating your class is when you group your class into smaller groups based on their level of understanding. Apart from the reduction in number it also helps you to know who needs more attention compared to the others and thus reducing stress for both the student and the teacher.

Conclusion

Remediation is not only for those suffering from one disability or the other it is meant for all students. After the covid-19 pandemic, not all students were placed in a remedial class because they couldn’t remember what they had been taught before the pandemic. So being placed in a remediation class isn’t a disease but another privilege or stance to learning that particular course fully.
