Entry Requirements:

Overview:

The University of St Andrews takes students from all over the globe, and they take into account a vast array of international qualifications. As part of the application review process, the University of St Andrews looks at the following documents:

  • Higher education academic record (updated till the last received transcript)
  • The context of the exam results
  • Personal Statement
  • Academic reference
  • English Language ability, if at all needed.

Academic requirements:

Suppose you are a postgraduate applicant or a postgraduate student looking to be a part of their study abroad programs. In that case, you must have completed a bachelor’s degree with honors in a relevant discipline of study with an overall grade of 2.1 from the UK, a B+ if your studies happened in Europe, and a 3.6 GPA out of 4 if you are from the USA. If you are from any other country, this equivalent will suffice. Postgraduate students must also have a solid grade in their current degree program.

English Language Requirements:

Like every other university, St Andrews also requires that its students show a demonstrated understanding of the English language as it is their medium of instruction. For this purpose, all of their applicants must present transcripts from English proficiency tests. St Andrews accepts various English proficiency tests like the TOEFL, PTE, and LanguageCert International ESOL.

Your English proficiency is accepted as long as it is within two years before the course start date. The required scores from these tests are explicitly fixed to tailor to your degree requirements, depending on the degree you’d like to apply for. As a result, the test score required differs. Make sure to look at all possible courses you would like to be a part of and make sure you are compliant with their English test score requirements.

EXCEPTIONS:

However, there are some exceptions here too. For example, you do not have to submit an English language test score if you come under any of the following categories:

  • If you are a UK national or a national of any country deemed a majority-English speaking country by the UK Visas and Immigration list.
  • If you are someone with a secondary/high school leaving qualification from an English-medium school that includes at least one subject with a substantial amount of writing in English and an English language educational environment.
  • If you are from a school in the UKVI list of countries, Singapore, or an IB English medium school, you meet these requirements, so you don’t need to submit proof of your language proficiency.
  • You are exempt from submitting an English language proficiency proof if you have been a part of or completed an International Foundation program at St Andrew’s and have achieved the required prerequisites to be a part of the undergraduate degree program.

If you don’t fall under any of the exceptions, the test score is needed as proof. If you’re applying for a postgraduate degree, you may not have to give the English Proficiency test score if you are under the following categories:

  • If you have a degree taught in English in the UK
  • If you have a degree from a country where English is recognized officially.
  • If you have a degree taught in English but obtained from a different country without official English recognition.
