In a situation where that isn’t the case, it is important to ask but to ask subtly and with tact, Replying with “ What do you want to speak about?’ seems like a rude reply,  Instead rephrase and say “ Thanks, but I would like to know the subject of our discussion as that would help me prepare adequately” or “Thanks, would this conversation be formal or informal and are there any particular subjects we would be talking about, if there are, please do not hesitate to let me know”.

  1. Replying in the negative:

This means replying to the sender, telling them that you do not share their sentiments and you are certain you don’t look forward to speaking with them. If you feel this way, the best approach would rather be no reply at all or a reply that would read thus:

Hello Sir/Ma, Thank you for your interest in speaking but unfortunately I will not be available to speak now or in the nearest future. Whatever correspondence between us can be done via email. Thanks for understanding.

This response rejects the offer to speak but does it with respect and as far as email interactions go, you want to stay civil and nice.
