History

Villanova University was established in 1842 by the Augustinians. Two Irish Augustinians from the Saint Augustinian church bought a 200-acre land in Villanova in Radnor township in 1841. The university was initially named the Augustinian college of Villanova. But, during the Philadelphia nativist riot, the college was burned and the Augustinians suffered from financial loss and had to close the college. But it was reopened in 1846 and the first batch of students from Villanova school graduated in 1847.

In 1848 the Villanova school was incorporated by the governor and was given permission to grant degrees to the students. The college gave its first master’s degree in 1859. After several years the Villanova school started establishing various other colleges.

In 1905 the school of technology was established and a 2-year pre-medical program was introduced to the students in 1915. And later the 2-year pre-medical program expanded to a 4-year pre-medical program and then started to offer the B.S in biology. After these events, a separate science division was established in 1926. 

The university was first a male-only college and as the years passed it was made fully co-educational. The university also started to open various other colleges and introduced new programs for the students.
