Tips For Getting into Nursing School?

GPA

Nursing programs will often state that a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is set at a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. In an associate degree, a two-year Registered Nurse program will have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA. However, the students getting into the programs have much higher GPAs. If the program has more applicants than there are positions in the program, institutions will opt for those with higher GPAs why take a 3.1 if you have a 4.0.

Missing requirements

There are a lot of requirements associated with your nursing school application, from references, teacher recommendations, immunization records, medical report or a physical, application fees, personal essays etc. All these documents need to be submitted all together at the same time to make a good first impression and avoid rejection.

Timing

Deadlines are important in college, hand-holding, reminders and pushing back the deadline won’t fly in higher eductions, no exceptions. Application process deadlines are set in stone.

Entrance exam scores

If your entrance exam scores aren’t high enough you will be rejected. There are two significant exams the HESI (Health Edication System Inc) or TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills). Both tests are designed to determine a student’s knowledge of health care subjects, exams range from 3.5 hours to 4 hours. A standard satisfactory pass grade is 75% and above, while anything under 75% is considered undesirable. The score from the test alone can be reason enough to reject your application even if everything else is perfect, you could have a 4.0 GPA and not be cut because your TEAS score is too low.

These exam scores indicate how you will do in the program, nursing evaluation criteria are a different breed and schools want to make sure you can first make it into the program, only the cream of the crop can make it to the other nursing school.

Prerequisites

Don’t even bother applying for nursing school unless you have all the prerequisites or you’re at least in the last semester and those grades are pending and will be completed by the time application processes are in full swing.

Student nurse essentials during clinical placement

Backpack

There are not only easier on your back they also it many more items in them like an additional pair of shoes or a change of clothes for those unforeseen messy days at work.

Water Bottle

It is super important to stay hydrated and make sure you have a leak-proof big bottle big enough to last you through the day.

Notepad

Keep it in your nearest pocket for easy access, so that anytime your mentor says something of significance you take note of it, especially something you could forget after lunch.

Compression socks

These are a lifesaver for nurses, firstly they stop your ankles from getting swollen by fighting with gravity, secondly, they prevent varicose veins thus reducing the risk of blood clots. As a student nurse on your feet for 12 to 15 hours, you need them more than anyone else.

FOB watch

It cements the prominent nurse uniform while allowing student nurses to keep track of multiple tasks that are mostly time-sensitive like administering medication or noting down respiratory rates of patients assigned to them during their shift. Pulling out your cellphone even when checking the time comes across as unprofessional to your patients.

Brainscape App

It is a learning application platform which incorporates active recall and spaced repetition functionality. It allows you to make your flashcards which you can access during your free time, on your way to the clinic, during your lunch or on the bus home. It’s great for studying for finals.

Everything a student nurse does will be scrutinised by a mentor, starting will observation and pill distribution. Placement usually evolved around medicine management and understanding the standard of procedures.
