Brown University is an American University and is one of the eight Ivy League schools. It was established on September 15, 1764. Its former name was Rhode Island College and is the seventh oldest university in the United States. Brown university constitutes six colleges: Alpert Medical School, School of Public Health, the College, School of Engineering, School of Professional Studies, and Graduate School. Brown University is ranked as the 5th best college in 2021 according to The Wall Street Journal. It is ranked 26th according to the Forbes ranking of America’s best colleges in 2021.Along with academics, Brown University offers many sports activities to the students. The university has one of the biggest sports programs in the United States having 32 intercollegiate teams. The members of any kind of sports team at Brown University are known as ‘Brown Bears’. Different Sports in Brown University-

Baseball-

The university has a men’s baseball team known as the Brown men’s baseball team that includes 28 players. The brown men’s baseball team is ranked 141 out of 271 colleges in division 1 of the Men’s baseball team. The team has a head coach and three assistant coaches. 

2. Basketball-

Brown university has a men’s basketball team that includes fifteen players. Along with academics, the men’s team has a great result in basketball and is ranked as167th best college in division 1 men’s basketball among the 324 colleges and universities. The team is led by a head coach and three assistant coaches. Brown University also had a Women’s basketball team which included eighteen players. Brown Women’s Basketball is ranked better than the men’s team, ranked 120 among the 324 universities in the best college for division 1 women’s basketball list. Like the men’s team, the women’s basketball team is also led by three assistant coaches and a head coach.

3. Fencing-

Brown University had a men’s fencing team with eight members and a women’s fencing team having thirteen members. Both the teams are led by two assistant coaches and a head coach. Along with academics having a progress rate of 1000, both the teams are excellent in fencing and are the Division 1 teams. 

4. Football-

Brown University has provided a stadium ‘Richard Gouse Field at Brown Stadium’ to the football players to practice. The first football game was played in 1878 by the Brown Bears. The Brown football team has 91 members. It is one of the best college football teams in the USA. The team is guided by nine assistant coaches and one head coach.

5. Ice Hockey-

Brown University has provided the ‘Meehan Auditorium’ to practice for both men’s and women’s ice hockey teams. The Brown Women’s ice hockey team is the oldest women’s hockey team in America. The men’s team includes 28 members led by three assistant coaches and one head coach. The women’s team includes twenty-three players which are trained by a head coach. 

6. Soccer-

Stevenson-Pincince Field is the ground for the practice of soccer for both Brown men’s and women’s soccer teams. The Brown men’s soccer team has twenty-six players while the women’s soccer team has twenty-five players. Both the teams are assisted by a head coach and three assistant coaches.

7. Rowing- 

The rowing sport of Brown University is one of the most successful Rowing sports in the world. Seekonk River is provided for the men’s and women’s teams for rowing practice. The teams are trained by two assistant coaches and a head coach. Thirty-two players have been selected for the Olympics rowing program from Brown University and many national titles have been won by men’s and women’s teams in rowing.

8. Water Polo-

Water Polo is also one of the sports played at Brown University by both men’s and women’s teams and guided by the head coach and the assistant coaches. The women’s water polo team has twenty-four members while the men’s water polo team has nineteen members. 

9. Tennis-

Brown University also includes tennis as its major sport. The men’s team has eleven players while the women’s tennis team has ten players. The teams are guided by a head coach and assistant coaches.

10. Golf-

Golf is another sport at Brown University. It has a men’s team which includes nine players and is guided by an assistant coach and a head coach. The college also has a women’s golf team that includes eleven players and is guided by a head coach and an assistant coach. Along with other sports, golf has also earned a great place in the Brown University sports program. A lot of awards and medals have been won by both men’s and women’s golf teams. Brown University has provided an indoor golf facility for both the teams in Olney-Margolies Athletic Centre so that players can practice during a bad weather day.

11. Lacrosse-

Brown university has a men’s lacrosse team and a women’s lacrosse team. The Brown men’s lacrosse team constitutes 43 players while the women’s team consists of thirty-three players. Both the teams are guided by a head coach and three assistant coaches to perform their best on the field.

Removal of some sports programs-

Due to some budget issues, some sports were advised to be removed from the university athletics program in 2011. These included wrestling, men’s and women’s fencing, and women’s skiing. But then after some discussions, the decision of cutting off these sports were canceled.

Again in May 2020, Brown University has decided on the transition of eleven sports programs to a club sports games: men’s and women’s golf teams, men’s and women’s squash, men’s indoor and outdoor track and field, women’s skiing, men’s and women’s fencing, men’s cross country sport, women’s equestrian. 

Conclusion-

It can be concluded that Brown University has a variety of sports games for both men and women. The Brown Bears have won many titles in different games but still among the other ivy league schools, Brown University has won the least number of ivy league titles since 2008. It has won around two percent of the total ivy league matches.
