History

The Hillsdale college was founded in 1844 by Free Will Baptists – abolitionists. The Hillsdale college was known as the Michigan Central college from 1844 to 1855. The Hillsdale College’s first president was Daniel McBride Graham who was in charge from 1844 to 1848. During his time as the president, the college first admitted 5 students with a two-room Store. In 1845 Michigan state government incorporated the college and nearly 25 students enrolled after that.

Hillsdale college became the first American college to prohibit discrimination against race, gender, or religion. It also had a part in the abolition of slavery. It was the second college in America to provide women with degrees.

Nearly 80% of colleges founded before the Civil War did not survive, but Hillsdale did, thanks to the efforts of professor and preacher Ransom Dunn. Ransom Dunn was one of the acting Presidents of Hillsdale college and a teacher, being in charge for almost a half-century. He raised the money to construct the new campus in the 1850s.

First, the college was located in Spring Arbor, Michigan in 1844 and moved to Hillsdale in Michigan and got its name, Hillsdale college. The college had to be moved to another location because of the increase in the popularity of the college and hence more students enrolled. The college started with 5 students and now has more than 1400 students.

It began to outgrow, so a new location was needed for the college to construct a greater infrastructure to accommodate the rise in student strength. Another reason for changing the college to Hillsdale was during its period in Spring Arbor it did not have any facilities for accommodating students. So various locations were considered and at last, Hillsdale was selected. The people provided their support for the college as it would also grow their town.
