It was previously called Georgia Normal & Individual College, vested with the educational mandate to train women in the art of teaching and other industrial careers. It was not until 1971 that the name Georgia College was finally adopted. 25 years later, the name was stretched to meet the purpose of a Public Liberal Arts University.
