What happens if you just stop going to a college class?

The implications of not attending classes depend on the school policy or the lecturer taking a course. In some schools, there could be no penalty for skipping classes simply because the school may not have rules guiding class attendance. If you fail to participate in various academic activities like; writing exams, writing assignments, and projects, you will fail for not doing the needful.

However, some schools have class attendance policies. There will be a register for recording class attendance. The lecturer will assign the class representatives to mark for presence and absenteeism at the end of the lecture.

What happens if you stop going to college class?

You’ll almost certainly receive a whole semester of Fs if you simply quit going to class (or signing in to your assignments). It’s incredibly difficult to recover from a semester of Fs, and your college may even place you on academic probation or suspension.

1. Lack of Motivation to Read course Materials;

According to author Linda L. Williams’ research study “excessive Absences Intervention,” excessive absenteeism by students can result in students forgetting course material due to fewer hours of instruction and disrupting class instruction for teachers who must administer remediation to the absent student when he returns to school.

Furthermore, exam materials are discussed in class. On examination day, not all of a course’s topics will be covered. As a result, a student who never bothers to show up for class will miss out on the chance to learn smartly

2. Poor Academic Performance;

Students’ excessive absenteeism may also result in poor academic progress because they are not receiving teaching consistently. Because missing students are not present to learn crucial concepts and abilities that are examined on standardized exams, this problem also leads to low standardized test scores.

Furthermore, several factors influence students’ grades; nonetheless, missing classes is a major contributor to these issues. Obtaining the essential information for good grades will be difficult. Because lecturers utilize diverse methods in the classroom to reveal probable test questions.

3. Dropout Mentality

Excessive absenteeism among students can lead to growing apathy in school and academics in general. Excessive absenteeism, according to author Jason A. Schoeneberger’s “Longitudinal Attendance Patterns” study, increases the likelihood of a kid dropping out of school, which can have long-term effects for these children, such as lower average income and greater unemployment rates.

4. Possibility of Imprisonment;

Schoeneberger claims that students who drop out of school are more likely to fall into poverty because they are unable to find good-paying jobs due to their lack of education and resources. Dropouts who lack money and education are more prone to engage in criminal behavior that leads to imprisonment.

Factors Leading to Class absenteeism.

1 . Loss of Enthusiasm;

When a student starts to feel discouraged and unmotivated, that’s the beginning of absence from the class. This loss of enthusiasm could be low grades, dissatisfaction with the teaching methodology, or consideration to quit school. When such happens, it will take the effort of some concerned classmates to motivate the students.

2. Sickness;

When one is sick, he loses interest in virtually everything. It can affect one’s ability to work, slow down economic opportunities, and, most importantly, reduce academic performance. A student who is sick is very much likely to stop going to class for obvious reasons not to exacerbate the poor health.

3. Personal preference;

Most of the time, students decide to stop going to class simply because they feel delayed and bored. Sometimes the lecturer taking a course might not be proficient and as such won’t be able to show subject mastery. When a student can’t put up with a boring classroom, he has no other option than to find a place to invest his time. Either at home or the library.

4. Peer influence;

Some of the students stopped going to college classes simply because they found out their best friends did. The decisions we make, are usually influenced by our friends. For instance, Sampson called his friend while preparing for class in the morning. And when the friend told him about how unserious and inconsistent the lecturer was- boom! Sampson stayed back at home. However, Sampson later realized he missed the impromptu test given by the lecturer.

5. Inconsistent Timetable;

This factor is most prevalent in developing countries. A time will be fixed for a lecture then the next thing you will hear from the class representative is that; ” the lecture had been shifted, the lecturer canceled the class, they have changed the timetable.” All these can make students stop going to classes.

How to improve students’ class attendance

1 . Record Attendance Regularly;

One of the easiest strategies to enhance class attendance is to take attendance before or after the class. When the attendance had been taken, it will be used to determine whether or not the students will write exams. Students will never skip classes when such a strategy is carried out.

2 . Be Friendly with the students;

Students will feel at ease when they see their teachers showing care and support for them; Connect with the students via email or whatever Social Media platform, to build strong communication. However, there should be limitations.

3 . Use updated curriculum;

The more you teach students one thing repeatedly, they tend to feel bored and disinterested. But when you keep introducing fresh and latest information on a particular course, you tend to keep students’ attention.

4 . Boost personalized learning;

Students need to be encouraged to learn on their own they can easily come up with questions to ask teachers during the Class hour. It will improve class attendance.

5. Effective timetable scheduling;

There should be a complete and comprehensive-time for every academic session. When the school time is inconsistent, a school as a whole is rooting for class absenteeism. An effective timetable allows students to know exactly when subjects are arranged to be taught.

6. Give online tests & quizzes;

The effect of giving the online test is not only to improve class attendance but enhance students’ interest in the course. And it brings about flexibility in learning.

Conclusion

When you stop going to a college class you’ve either directly or indirectly shown you’re no longer part and parcel of the school you enrolled in. However, in unavoidable circumstances, you should endeavor to relate to the school administrators why you chose to stop going to class.
