Although some of these excuses are legit, it often leaves the professors in confusion as to how they can deal with the reasoning as they can be highly sensitive when students are involved. Here are some very interesting excuses that students use in their favor to be absent in college classes before and after the pandemic.

Corona or Common diseases

Corona being an obvious excuse that does not need any reasoning in the current scenario. The pandemic has stolen most of our time in the span of two years and changed our daily routine completely. At helpless times like this, our body does not allow us to focus, and it is advised that we take care complete care of ourselves let alone attending college. Although educational institutions have been extremely cautious and allow us to study from our homes, they equally worry about our wellbeing as well. Common diseases like dengue, typhoid, chickenpox is seasonal but highly infectious as well. Although the death rate may not be as high as the corona, our lives are at stake until we are cured. These excuses are inevitable, and it is risky even if the institutions expect students to appear in classes.

Special occasions and festivities

Special occasions can be both positive and negative in a person’s life. In a cultural economy, the connections that people make with each other are what bring harmony to society. Festivities like Christmas and Thanksgiving are the time to be jolly but sometimes events like a best friend’s wedding or birthday are equally celebrated for which institutions cannot stop functioning for our benefit. Important functions are a common excuse that is received by institutions for students missing their classes. Although colleges do not have to be understanding of what these personal functions could mean, some colleges manage to decline such requests if they are received in advance if its protocols are extremely strict.

On the other hand, negative situations are inevitable and are moreover are sudden circumstances that we unfortunately find ourselves in. Deaths or death anniversaries of a loved one is a personal grievance that nobody can understand better than ourselves. Spending quality time with our friends and families should a priority and it is a forgivable excuse.

Mental state

No matter how many friends or professors help us get through college, there is academic pressure to some extent depending on whatever the subjects may be. Everyone has their days wherein their emotions direct how their day turns out. It is obvious that even youngsters feel like they are not in the mood to push themselves to be academically involved on some days. Sometimes, it may not be a mistake to be understood about their mental health even if they are young. In the past feeling mentally unwell did not seem like a valuable excuse but in the present times, institutions take the time to ensure that students are not feeling overburdened. It has become necessary to understand and respect one’s mental state towards college. As a result, institutions notice that students do feel more belonged and tend to be more engaged with their academic development as well.

Unstable internet connection

The most common excuse across the student population is that their internet connection is unstable. Although it seems like a helpless scenario, it can create confusion and often is obvious when students use it as a coupon especially during presentations or when they are answerable to their respective faculty. As education lies in the fate of technology presently because of the pandemic, it is a constant worry if students are at least getting fifty percent knowledge from what is taught in classes. With the absence of an educational atmosphere and a constantly distracted mind, such excuses are just an add-on to the already affected education sector.

Medical issues

Another commonly used excuse is the basic health condition of students. Even if the medical issues may be common such as a fever, cold and cough when dealing with a large group of people especially at a young age could get worse for the sick student as well as spread across the class as well. It is always advised to keep to your homes when you are sick by institutions to avoid further repercussions. Let us not forget that these common infections are the symptoms of the virus that has turned tables in our lives today.

Transportation issues

With a Netflix-driven life, we have binge nights that obviously affect us the next morning. One of the after-effects is leaving the college bus. It is true that some of us may not require public transportation, but it is not the case for all. Usually excuses like this are not well received and are not excused for either. It is expected that we are cautious and ensure that we get to classes on time. Some have dramatic excuses like tire punctures or caught by the cops on the way to college, but whether it is true or false we all have rough days, and these excuses cannot save our attendance. Luckily, we do not face these issues with being caught by the pandemic instead.

Pet days

Some of us have the privilege to live with our best friends forever and it’s hurting when our pets get sick and we feel like we cannot leave their side because unlike humans, animals cannot say how they are feeling. To avoid the risk of their lives, we have no choice but to observe their health and ensure that they are okay. The impact of a pet can be immense and a loss as such is almost unbearable because they become part of our families as well. When we know someone of that long, we get so attached that it is nothing less than a loss of human being. Excuses as such are highly sensitive to students, their feelings are too fragile, and grievance is moreover a right than an excuse.

College fests

Life of a college student in the world of opportunities before them. A space like a college, allows us to explore beyond the subject that we intend to study, we get to exercise our passions and skills that are not entirely possible within college premises. Cultural and college fests are a collaborative space wherein young adults get to build a network and compete with students from other universities. Institutions usually do allow students to attend fests with attendance marked, however, they expect students to email their respective faculty with the details about the classes they will be missing and about programs that they are taking part in as well.

Honest excuses

Some students are very truthful about silly mistakes that they make leading them to miss their classes. There is no point crying over spoilt milk but sometimes honestly is easily excused. Based on real stories, people have shocking excuses like “I thought it was a Sunday”, “I thought it was a holiday on Saturdays”, the commonly known “I overslept”, “a toddler threw up on me in the bus” and “my crush wasn’t coming on that day”.

Students who usually tend to be honest with what caused their absence is often excused and it is quite amusing to receive such reasons for faculty as well. It is a huge risk for students as well because they would not know how their stories were going to pan out.

Forgetful days

Forgetful days truly make for the worst beginnings of our days. It pains when we get past the hustle only to realize that we do not have our ID cards to enter college or perhaps, we have left our lens kits or spectacles at home and cannot manage to get through the rest of the day. Silly mistakes like this, sends us back home only to feel worse than attending classes. These excuses are often frowned upon and mocked by professors even if they can be as truthful as they can get.

Social activities and protests

Most colleges do not engage or encourage students to participate in social activities and protests but as young adults and the future of tomorrow, it is naturally their responsibility to raise to the occasion and express their opinions if in case there is an issue to be dealt with. Their lives are at stake at such risky times, but college does not stop students unless their college names are pulled into the personal fight of students. Social protests are a matter of sensitivity and neither does the college or anyone have the right to influence the business of people’s personal right to expression. The perspective of young adults is usually taken into consideration because they are the future that is expected to abide by the regulations. If it is not well-received, then small movements like protests can change the larger decisions made upon the country. Excuses as such become more of a responsibility in such cases and are left untouched.

Overachievers

As the academic year ends, some students plan to have more days to study in a comfortable space like their homes and ensure that they have enough attendance to absent themselves later without it affecting their credits. In such cases, it is a matter of convenience and comfort if the students complete their responsibilities.  Even if excuse letters are a formality, the reasons as fair as this cannot affect them whether it is well-received or not.

Technical difficulties

With a technology-driven lifestyle, Laptops and phone crashes are simple loopholes that student use to escape from classes and it absolutely supports them because there is no service center to help fix these problems that sometimes act as an inconvenience for students because it can easily affect their study timeline and force them to switch to smaller screens which would only affect their eyesight. Communication is important especially in a very stuck-up situation like ours, we need constant communication to share our feelings and even help each other academically. With technical difficulties disrupting our daily lives both personally and academically, studying at home may become rather uncomfortable.

Students comprise a very large part of society and are the most influential sector as well. Although these excuses for absence may be true or false, they suddenly enter a space with so much freedom that they can use to their advantage. As college students, they do have the right to have good and rough days equally. As professors, it is important that they are being heard rather than allowing them simply rebel. It is difficult to comprehend the daily lives of a student because their backgrounds may be completely different from each other, college being a space wherein people with different stories come together they could carry a personal struggle, a student loan, a broken home, or a broken heart behind them. An excuse, simple or complicated should be analyzed before questioned upon because it could be interpreted in an incorrect manner. Students must be provided with space wherein they feel free, comfortable, and undoubtedly themselves. This will allow them to become the reformed, adaptive, and thoughtful adults of tomorrow. No excuse is invalid for an outcome like this.
