Do Colleges Have Dress Codes?

A pertinent topic on which I want to write something relevant where it will clear some kind of air of confusion, It is not a new thing to be discussed or debated – this topic had been stirred by the college administrations, educators, even politicians and of course the beloved students who are in the pivotal point. Well, it is a topic to be dealt with morality and ethics, not with blocked heads and closed minds. The topic being whether collegians need to obey dress code or not. Let us know more detail about ‘Do Colleges Have Dress Codes?’.

Do Colleges Have Dress Codes?

Do Colleges Have Dress Codes?

To tell you the truth, colleges have some written dress code. Do not mix it up with the uniform. It definitely governs by the climate, culture, demographical and geographical locations, community, society etc. For example, in an Indian society, it is expected – the students, girls or boys are putting on Indian modern dresses, not much of revealing like shorts, miniskirts, off shoulder dresses, figure hugging, too much of crops etc.

The bottom line is that the dresses should match with the group, not standing out.

Dress, Dressing And Dress Code?

A dress, irrespective of gender, is an apparel often wore by male or female to carry themselves when they are in indoors (at home) or outdoors (out to open).

Dressing means the way one dresses up with cloths and foot wares and hairdo and carry those confidently in front of the known or the unknown world. One must be responsible for his or her own dressing sense.

Last but not the least the Dress Code.

Well, Britannica Dictionary explains Dress Code as a set of rules encoded by any group or organizations as what is to be worn or not, particularly in schools, colleges, clubs, restaurants etc.

More On Dress Code

Dress codes to be maintained by the students in colleges for different places, different purposes. For example, in class rooms, in laboratory, in sports centre, for job interviews, same dresses cannot be applied. Be it the most liberal country or the most conservative country, these have to be adhered. Dress code of the USA Universities and colleges are quite surprisingly most casual. Whereas, a foreign student, coming from a conservative country, will find this contrast as the most shocking thing. The reverse is also true.

A Comparison Of Dress Code Between The Western Country And India Due To Difference In Culture

In this age of supreme liberalization, when values are diminishing day by day, when the students are over confident about their haves and have nots, when the teachers, parents and others remain as mere facilitators, when the generic pedagogical approach has changed from teacher centric to the student centric, a mere “dress code” imposed by any educational institute remained as a stepney.

Each country has its own culture and we are grown up to imbibe that. We obey the elders in our formative years without any challenge and later on, after becoming matured, starts questioning and revolt to those habits, rules and disciplines.

One has to think from the point of view of discipline and in colleges, where the basic purpose is to get taught to advance to the next level of education, this dress code is kind of a very loose bond to achieve the discipline. So, according to the Indian culture, where we prefer to obey and maintain a typical dress code for male or female students, the western culture completely relies on the wish of the students.

Sometimes, muti religion India plays a typical spoilsport for dress code in colleges. For example, a student from a conservative Punjabi family may argue to carry a small knife (kirpan), a Muslim girl student may argue to get permission to enter in the classroom wearing with the hijab or burqas. That’s why, uniform dress code in Indian colleges is a must.

On the contrary, the western culture, typically, an American culture is so liberal, that a student can enter with gun and fire at his/her fellow students to make things havoc.

Though these are not directly linked with dress code but part of strong discipline in both the places.

Conclusion

My opinion goes like this, Dress Code is a very small, harmless step, which should be applied to all the students coming regularly, year after year to the colleges which are regarded as the temple of learning.

There are pros and cons about the concept of dress code. Some says, Dress code for schools is good, but not for colleges, some others are in favour of dress code in colleges. But there is a marked difference in the concept of Uniform and Dress code. School uniform are accepted almost universally whereas in case of Dress code in colleges, people are of different opinions.
