Brigham Young University (BYU) is a private research university that is located in Provo, Utah, a large city in United States. This private higher education institution was founded in the year 1875 by a religious leader called Brigham Young and it is operated and sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In the 2022 edition of Best Colleges, it ranked No 79 in National Universities, No 6 in Best Value schools and No 335 in Top Performers on Social Mobility. Lets find out is BYU an ivy league school?

Brigham Young University is not yet as selective as the Ivy League schools but it is foreseen to be as academically selective in about 10 years. Just this year they had over 13,000 applicants, of which they accepted over 7000. On the other hand, Stanford had almost 44,000 applicants and Harvard, 34,000, and they both accepted about 2000 of those applicants. Brigham Young University is seen by most students as being highly selective, this is the same ranking given to the Ivy League Schools. As such 99% of American High School seniors count themselves out of Brigham Young University either because they do not want to attend or because they do not believe that they can get in and so they do not bother to apply. Half the applicants admitted into Brigham Young University have an SAT score between 1200 and 1410 and there is an application fee.

Is Getting an Admission In Ivy League Schools Hard ? 

Getting admitted into an Ivy League School is not an easy process when compared with being admitted at other universities. The admission process for Ivy League schools is highly competitive. One would need to achieve standards higher than required at other universities. Under the admission requirements, test score, recommendations, extra-curricular activities and other academic achievements matter. 

I remember watching American movies like Legally Blonde and seeing how hard she studied for her SAT exams just to get admission into Harvard University, in addition to that, she had meaningful extra-curricular activity as she was the captain of one of the best cheerleading teams. In that movie we see how hard she studies because she knows the great deal to be accepted into Harvard University, however, her motivation was based on the fact that her boyfriend had broken up with her to be with a law student at Harvard University. Her hard work paid off and she was accepted into Harvard but the admission process was not a walk in the park. On getting there we also see that you require hard work to be at the top in the Ivy League schools as their learning methods are indeed professional and explicit.

Are Ivy League Schools Expensive? 

The tuition fees of Ivy League schools are very expensive as well as cost of living especially if on-campus accommodation. Ivy League schools have historically been a breeding ground for great achievers which is why most scholars aim to get undergraduate degree, masters degree and even post graduate degrees from those universities.

Brigham Young University has a tuition fee of $3,060 for undergraduates full time students and $3,850 for graduates. The Church of Christ of Latter-day saints subsidizes tuition prices with its members’ tithing funds. In principle, each student attending Brigham Young University is on scholarship. It is considered as a non-profit organization.

In conclusion, it is clear that Brigham Young University is a highly distinguished school; it has most of the qualities and features of the Ivy League schools. It equally has a professional athletic team known as the BYU Cougars. However, it has not being boldly written and officially recognized as an Ivy League School. As such, we cannot say that it is but as earlier stated, it has been foreseen that within the next 10 years, they will be enlisted as one of the Ivy League Schools. Till then, our fingers remain crossed and we wait in anticipation for the official recognition of Brigham Young University as an Ivy League School.
