Introduction:
Maine College of Art (MECA) is a renowned art and design institution located in the heart of Portland, Maine. As a small and intimate college, MECA provides a unique and personalized experience for its students, and its dorms play a crucial role in fostering a supportive and creative living environment. MECA offers a variety of dorm options that cater to the diverse needs and preferences of its student body. In this blog post, we will explore the different dorm options at MECA, their features, and what sets them apart.
Traditional Residence Halls:
MECA’s traditional residence halls offer a classic college living experience, with communal bathrooms and shared living spaces. The majority of MECA’s dorms are located in the Porteous building, a historic former hotel located just a few blocks from the college’s main campus. Porteous features a variety of room types, from single rooms to four-person suites. The rooms are spacious and well-lit, with large windows that provide ample natural light.
One of the most popular residence hall options at MECA is the Porteous Suites. These four-person suites feature a common living area and a kitchenette, making them perfect for students who prefer a more independent living experience. The Porteous Suites also offer stunning views of the city skyline and the surrounding mountains. Students who live in the Porteous Suites have the opportunity to connect with their roommates and other students on their floor, creating a sense of community that is integral to the MECA experience.
Apartment-Style Dorms:
For students who prefer more independent living, MECA also offers apartment-style dorms. These dorms feature a full kitchen, living area, and private bedrooms, making them perfect for students who want to live with friends or roommates. One such option is the Oak Street Apartments, which are located just a few blocks from the main campus. The apartments are spacious and modern, with open-concept living areas and high ceilings. Each unit can accommodate up to four students, and the building features on-site laundry facilities and bike storage.
Another apartment-style dorm option is the Art House, which is located just a few blocks from the main campus. The Art House is a three-story building that features nine apartments, each with its own unique floor plan. The apartments are fully furnished and equipped with modern appliances, making them the perfect space for students who value comfort and convenience. The Art House also features a communal courtyard, which provides a peaceful outdoor space for students to relax and socialize.
Specialty Housing:
MECA also offers specialty housing options for students who have specific interests or needs. One such option is the LGBTQ+ Community Living Space, which is a safe and supportive living environment for LGBTQ+ students and their allies. The space features a communal living area, a kitchenette, and a private bathroom. Students who live in the LGBTQ+ Community Living Space have the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and participate in events and activities that celebrate diversity and inclusivity.
Another specialty housing option is the MECA on the Move program, which provides students with the opportunity to live and work in different cities across the country. The program offers fully-furnished apartments in cities such as New York City, Boston, and Los Angeles, as well as internships and job opportunities in the art and design industry. The MECA on the Move program provides students with a unique and immersive experience that allows them to explore different cultures and communities while pursuing their academic and professional goals.
Conclusion:
Overall, MECA offers a variety of dorm options that cater to the diverse needs and preferences of its student body. Whether students prefer a traditional residence hall, an apartment-style dorm, or a specialty housing option, they can find the perfect fit at MECA. The college’s dorms provide a comfortable and supportive living environment that enables students to focus on their creative pursuits and connect with like-minded individuals.
