The College came into existence in the year 2000, when two colleges (Shelby State Community College and State Technical Institute, Memphis) coalesced as one. The merger became imperative when the cost of managing the two former colleges became too high. To reduce running costs and increase the convergence of academic and technical education of the separate colleges, the management of both schools decided to merge as one. The coming together of both colleges made it possible for values, prestige, fame, and excellence achieved during the days both institutions were separate to be brought together under one umbrella.
